Embracing challenges on and off the court

How determination and focus drive success in every competition.

Last Saturday, as I boarded a flight to Dallas, TX, I knew I was stepping into one of the most pivotal months of my life. With my grandkids by my side, I was heading for my first major tennis tournament — a journey filled with excitement, nervous energy and immense pride. This Grand Slam opportunity marked not only a milestone in my athletic career but also a chance to show my family what resilience and focus can achieve. For me, tennis isn't just about winning; it's about setting an example of perseverance, especially when life throws curveballs. Every memory we create, whether on the court or in our everyday lives, holds profound significance.

In preparation for the tournament, I reflected on the dedication it took to get here. From grueling practice sessions to jumping rope as part of my conditioning, every step was deliberate. Jumping rope has been a game-changer, sharpening my footwork, coordination and endurance — all essential for handling intense rallies and quick movements on the court. The discipline required in training spills over into life, teaching valuable lessons in focus and adaptability. Even with personal challenges, like supporting a loved one through tough times, staying physically active provided a mental boost that kept me grounded and ready to face each day.

This week has been nothing short of surreal. Securing my first professional hard-court victory at the New Haven Open and advancing to the Grand Slam quarterfinals felt like the culmination of years of effort. Facing off against the world’s top player in back-to-back tournaments tested not only my physical fitness but also my mental fortitude. Each serve, each return, was a battle of willpower. Yet, the moments spent on the court reminded me why I love this sport — it’s about showing up, giving it your all and proving to yourself that you belong.

As I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded of the power of preparation, determination and staying present. Whether it’s jump rope training to build stamina or celebrating small wins along the way, every step counts. This experience has taught me that success isn’t just about trophies or accolades; it’s about embracing challenges, learning from setbacks and cherishing the moments that truly matter. As I look forward to the next chapter, I feel grateful for the lessons tennis has taught me — not just as an athlete, but as a person striving to be better every day.
